I am a South African citizen who recently became a US citizen. I am an Electrical engineer by profession with little or no understanding of Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA). I, in error or lack of information thereof, failed to file FBAR and report foreign accounts in previous years. In 2011 my husband and I became aware of a situation that caused us much concern. It was early 2012, and a few years after opening an offshore GoldMoney account, that I stumbled upon FBAR and US offshore account reporting requirements. I needed to back-file, and even figure out how to file! Information on how to comply was so scarce, and the fines so high for mistakes that it was a stressful time to say the least! Finding someone to even help seemed a tall order too. CPAs in town had little knowledge at all and didn’t want to take on the risk. GoldMoney, in the Channel Islands had no idea about US filing requirements either! I didn’t even know what type of account this was in US terminology.

We first came to know about FBAR around end of 2012 and found out that we had some accounts in our home country that should have been reported. Unfortunately, we did not have any knowledge of these accounts and they were opened by our parents when we were minors. It was a complicated and unpleasant situation, exacerbated by a myriad of conflicting information online.
